Our Beginnings
Our organization was founded over 40 years ago in 1983 as a result of a group of pastors meeting to pray about the high rate of abortions in San Francisco. As they prayed together, the Lord convicted them to offer His helping hand, love and compassion to women facing an unplanned pregnancy. This group of pastors started the Crisis Pregnancy Center in the basement of First Orthodox Presbyterian Church in the Sunset District of San Francisco. At the time they offered free pregnancy tests, pregnancy options counseling, and clothing to the women they served. As the center grew, they realized there might be a larger need in different neighborhoods, so in 2002 the center was moved to a rented location on Mission Street in the Excelsior District (Outer Mission) of San Francisco. We have been in this location for the past 22 years. At the time of the move, our organization name was changed to Alpha Pregnancy Center.
In 2013 we began a two-year undertaking to become a fully licensed medical clinic capable of providing medical-grade pregnancy tests and ultrasounds. We received our medical license in April of 2015. In our many years of service, our center has remained true to its original mission to protect life and offer the hope of Christ to families. We have also seen that women and families experiencing an unplanned pregnancy in the Bay Area often face incredible challenges and because of this we are compelled to lovingly walk with them through these challenges. Therefore our services expanded from simply prenatal support to a more comprehensive support. In addition to the pregnancy testing and options counseling we started with, we are now providing ultrasound imaging, medical referrals, parenting classes, adoption information, post-abortion support, food insecurity solutions, material assistance, housing resources, financial literacy classes and job advancement resources (essentially case management).
